I’ve been lucky enough to have been a leader in technology for over 20 years. The various jobs and projects I have had in this time leveraged all of my education which included my Doctoral studies in Educational Technology Leadership. However, it is my Master’s degree in Information and Learning Technologies and Library Sciences that gave me the most real world applications. These experiences have included everything from Drones, Live Streaming, Instruction, Virtual Reality and so much more. Through these experiences I developed a deep understanding of the technological needs in education. Technology has been a passion of mine for many years and has opened countless doors for me.
My experiences have been vast. Twice I had the chance to open schools from the ground up serving as the technology lead. In those situations I got to broaden my scope of understanding and needs that are specific to schools, students, and teachers. It also provided me with a deep technical understanding of networks and hardware. My biggest take away is that technology needs to be invisible yet available everywhere. It cannot be a roadblock to instruction.
On the instructional side of things, I was trained to be a Technology Coach through the Student Centered Coaching model by Diane Sweeney. Through that I was able to harness the skills necessary to share, coach, and teach side by side with teachers. I’ve also had the opportunity to teach technology courses including one of my favorites, Media Studies which was a course developed after Chicago University’s Journalism program. I also have taught IB Computer Science, AP Research, and I started my career as a History and Economics teacher. Most recently I have developed curriculum pathways as the Department Head for the Design and Technology Department at ISB. With this I also designed and implemented a targeted audit of the ISTE Standards at ISB.
While these experiences range from opening schools to teaching in the classroom, my philosophy is still that good instruction is good instruction with or without technology.
